Douglas Kellner, Ph.D.
Cultural Studies - Philosophy of Education - Critical Pedagogy - Media Culture
Dr. Kellner was the professor who greatly influenced the development of my philosophy of education, which shaped my theory of education for and in the 21st century. It began in 1994 with his introducing me to the concept and study of Media Literacy, then the use of the Internet and multimedia as a vehicle of curriculum and instruction. This ultimately led to my model of project-based learning, or PBL21, including the creation of my Critical Attributes of 21st Century Education and the Multiple Literacies for the 21st Century compass roses.
Although I had virtually no background in philosophy, I pressed for admission to a class he was teaching, and he relented, allowing me to enroll in one of his courses on Critical Theory - a graduate level philosophy course!
Decades before other educators, Dr. Kellner envisioned a global, fully accessible education. He knew that multiple literacies would be required for the 21st century, and years ago he stated, correctly, that "the advent of new technologies and multimedia are causing a more dramatic revolution than the transition from an oral to a print culture."
He was a wonderful supporter of my explorations and passions regarding education, and served as the Chair of my Dissertation Committee at the Univ. of Texas at Austin.
