PBL21 meets AI
Online Course Syllabus
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The key is to approach the integration of AI into education thoughtfully, keeping students' needs and well-being at the forefront. By addressing challenges and harnessing the possibilities responsibly, AI has the potential to revolutionize education and empower learners of all backgrounds.
The goal of this course is to increase educators’ ability to seamlessly integrate AI tools into their Project-Based Learning curriculum. Thus, they can engage and empower students through meaningful, academically rigorous learning experiences.
The course challenges educators to arrive at their own response to the driving question, “How can I maximize the benefits of PBL21 supported by effectively integrating AI tools?”
This course takes you through a process of identifying and then using AI tools for a variety of purposes in the classroom, from personalized learning to adaptive assessments, virtual tutors and assistants, unit and lesson planning, time management, scheduling, and much more!
COURSE STRUCTURE
We are very excited about our brand new gamified, online course PBL21 meets AI!
This course consists of three self-paced modules. Each module includes a mix of lessons and activities. Examples of activities include video case studies, background readings, interactive exercises, guided exploration of digital tools, reflection prompts. and self-assessments to check for understanding. The lessons guide participants to build a toolkit of digital resources to support student learning goals and facilitate project management at each stage of PBL21.
Embedded within the Learning Environment are our 3 compasses for 21st century education:
Module I – Framework for 21st Century Education
This Framework calls for planning and designing the Learning Environment – the Physical Environment (a classroom or studio, an entirely new facility, or Living Schoolyards). Then we will consider AI tools that support the Social/Emotional environment, and finally, the Academic Environment.
Module 2 - PBL21 – The next step in the evolution of Project-Based Learning.
Utilize our Framework to intentionally design a PBL21 unit of curriculum, with your students and community in mind. We recommend, but do not require, creating a project that is interdisciplinary. It is much easier to ensure that your students are learning at higher levels, their learning goes “deeper”, and it becomes clear that the work they are doing is relevant, rigorous, and real-world. Student achievement and motivation will soar! By the way, test scores will increase.
Module 3 – Meet AI!
You will also be introduced to AI tools that support our Framework for 21st Century Education. In your exploration of AI tools, you will identify a selection of tools you feel would be most appropriate for you and your students. Then you will integrate them into your unit design and lesson plans.
Completion Criteria
To receive the certificate of completion, you must complete all the required assignments. We utilize authentic assessments for this course, just as we utilize them in our curriculum. In fact, that is how we create “cheat-proof” assessments.
