Physical Environment and 21st Century Learning
In the Framework for 21st Century Education, shown below, 3 compasses are embedded within an intentionally designed Learning Environment. We begin with the Physical Environment. The basic facets of the Physical Environment which we must design to support 21st century learning include:
Within the design of the facilities, we include the organization of time, space and people. We include the design, or arrangement, of furniture and resources. And we connect the indoors to the outdoors seamlessly.
- The Facilities
- The Classroom
- Special Learning Spaces on Campus
- The Living Schoolyard
- Special Spaces in The Community
Within the design of the facilities, we include the organization of time, space and people. We include the design, or arrangement, of furniture and resources. And we connect the indoors to the outdoors seamlessly.
Three compasses in the Framework are: I. Critical Attributes of Curriculum and Instruction II. Multiple Literacies for the 21st Century, and III. 7 Survival Skills of the 21st Century In this article we will consider Facilities that support 21st century, student-centered learning. The design and use of the facilities and schoolyard may be evaluated based upon how well they support, rather than impede, the elements of the three compasses. |
