Edmund Husserl lived from 1859-1938; he was a German mathematician and the principal founder of Phenomenology. He called the contents of the conscious mind "phenomena" after the Greek word for "appearances". The mind structures its contents by means of concepts which range from the general (space, time, education) to the specific (teacher, student, text). Phenomenology seeks to describe the nature and scope of the concepts underlying all branches of knowledge, including education, and to place these branches on foundations that are "absolutely certain."

According to Husserl, we derive most of our basic concepts from the "lifeworld" (Lebenswelt). This is the everyday human world of homes, jobs and hobbies. We think of this world as objective and independent, yet is we who sustain it and give it meaning. Social institutions and practices - money, markets, recreations, and schools - mean what they do because we have learned to think and talk about them in common ways. To understand the lifeworld properly, we must describe it - phenomenologically - the concepts through which we give it meaning. This is contrasted to the world as described by science.
