November 15 and 16, 2007 in New Orleans

You attended our two-day professional development experience in which you
learned about designing curriculum for the 21st century. You developed an
interdisciplinary, integrated framework for a unit of curriculum, and
incorporated the classroom strategies you learned during the workshop.
You went back to your classroom and implemented the unit. It was a
learning experience, and probably very rewarding.
Now let's take this curriculum design a step further. In this two-day
follow-up we will evaluate the implementation of the curriculum framework you
designed during the first workshop. We will re-design and polish this
unit, or create a new one. Then, designing down, we will write a detailed
unit including:
-
Final Unit Outcomes
-
Developing Outcomes - activities, strategies and sources -
this is where we define specifically what resources the students will be
using, what activities they will be doing, and how and with whom they will
be doing them.
-
Enabling Outcomes - basic skills, strategies and vocabulary.
This will include everything from basic language arts skills such as grammar
and punctuation to strategies students must have in order to do the
activities in the Developing Outcomes. This is where you include
strategies students must learn such as Jigsawing, Notetaking, Interviewing
and more.
-
Individual Authentic Assessments - how each student will be
assessed for each unit outcome.
-
Group Assessments - how each small group product will
be assessed for each unit outcome.
-
Materials Bank - from basic materials for projects to the
resources students will using to locate their content information and
conduct their research.
-
Activities Bank - list of possible activities for each unit.
-
Standards Bank - here you will list the state and/or
national content standards taught in each unit.
Not only will you develop a more refined unit, you will gain a
great deal from the interactions and discussion with others at the workshop as
you share and discuss your experiences with designing 21st century curriculum
and classrooms.
