BANKING TO BAKING

Many of the following
project/businesses are actual examples which teachers and principals
at schools have told us about at conferences. See
Recommended Resources
below for
a list of excellent books and other resources that will offer a
multitude of ideas for excellent projects! Also be sure to check
out all the opportunities available for collaboration with schools
around the world on our
Global Collaborative Projects
page. Find more ideas for units
involving Business and Industry at these links.
| School Bank
- the students constructed an actual working
bank building in the foyer of their elementary school.
This project involved architectural design, purchasing
materials, construction, as well as creating and
operating the actual business. |
| Newspaper
|
| Cookie Store or
Bakery -
this was a cooperative project done
by a 2nd grade and a 5th grade class. Their business
was so successful that the principal had to create a
purchasing schedule for what days each grade level could
purchase cookies. This was an ongoing multi-year
project. |
| Catering
Service - this class started a small
spaghetti dinner catering business, serving luncheons
and dinners for community groups. |
| General Store
-
students run a small
store at the school which sells school supplies and
other items which students may purchase. |
| Environmental
Projects -
refer to our
Global Collaborative Projects
page and our
Ecoliteracy page. |
| Television
Productions -
this school was able to install
a state-of-the-art television studio at their campus
thanks to grant monies. Television production is a
regular part of their curriculum. |

and Industry - Many links to resources here as well as ideas
for all kinds of unit themes related to business.
The Kid's Guide to Social Action
- I consider this book a must have for every campus. It
is loaded with excellent tools and ideas. One example that
stands out in my mind is a fourth grade class that saved the
Battleship Texas. It was about to go to the scrap yard when the
class heard about it. They started a campaign to save the ship
and raised the money to have it restored.
