This one-day workshop will focus on how to design and implement powerful units of curriculum based on meaningful service-learning projects.  These projects are the ultimate 21st century curriculum.  They are motivational, provide real-life connections to the curriculum, teach the standards, build skills and knowledge required for the 21st century, and meet all the critical attributes of an ideal 21st century curriculum.  You and your students will love this project, and best of all, you'll know that you are making a real difference.  The world is going to be a better place for your efforts!

At this workshop we will explore the concept of Service-Learning and examine actual examples of real projects done by students.  You will find answers to these questions and more:

Ø      What is Service-Learning?

Ø      What are the components of a Service-Learning project:

Ø      How do we organize such a project?

Ø      How do we decide what kind of project to do?

Ø      How big should this project be?

Ø      Can this project carry the mandated curriculum?

Ø      Can this project be an After-School Program?

You will also:

  • View excellent models of actual service learning projects

  • Begin a preliminary design for a service-learning project to take back to your school, based on the resources and needs in your community.

  • Learn about excellent resources, from books and web sites to grants and funding.
